Knee Pain Q & A
What causes knee pain?
Knee pain usually happens as a result of injuries or conditions that affect the health and function of the structures of your knee. Among the most common causes of knee pain are:
Soft-tissue injuries
The knee is made up of several different structures, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Injuries to these structures are common sources of knee pain.
Soft-tissue injuries typically happen from overuse, overextension, and activities that require twisting, cutting, and jumping. ACL injuries are one of the most common soft-tissue injuries that affect the knee.
When the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is torn, it causes pain and swelling and limits your range of motion.
Tendinitis
Tendinitis refers to irritation and inflammation of the tendons. Patellar tendinitis is a type of tendinitis that affects the tendon that connects your knee cap to your shinbone.
Tendinitis in the knee is common in patients who participate in activities like running, skiing, cycling, and jumping. Tendinitis is primarily an overuse injury that’s caused by repeated stress on the tendons in your knee.
Arthritis
Arthritis refers to swelling and tenderness in your joints.
Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, causes the cartilage that protects the ends of your bones to break down over time. Cartilage cushions the bones and allows your joints to move without friction.
When enough of your cartilage has worn away, the bones begin to rub against each other, causing intense pain and limited mobility.
If you experience worrisome or ongoing knee pain, Dr. Nasir and his team can help you determine the underlying cause and best nonsurgical treatment for effective relief.
